Beginner Cutting Checklist for Apprentices

Before you pick up the shears

Daily practice checklist

  1. Sectioning drill
    • Create clean partings with clips and comb.
    • Practice scissor handling while moving around the head.
    • Aim for even tension and body balance.
  2. Blunt cutting basics
    • Work on horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines using 440C training shears.
    • Check for clean, even ends before moving on.
    • Log any drag or tension issues in your maintenance sheet.
  3. Point cutting introduction
    • Start on mannequin hair. Use short, controlled motions with the tips.
    • Keep wrists relaxed; re-check drop test if motion feels stiff.
  4. Scissor-over-comb fundamentals
    • Practice on mannequin or short-hair models with 440C or VG-10 shears.
    • Focus on comb control and consistent angle.
  5. Slide cutting prep
    • Only after mastering blunt/point techniques, practice light slide cuts on damp hair.
    • If the blade catches, stop and inspect maintenance logs—slide cutting exaggerates dullness.

Weekly reflection

  • Record each practice session in a skill log (date, technique, observations).
  • Review the Cutting Technique hub for detailed drill instructions.
  • Share logs with your senior stylist for feedback.

Monthly goals

  • Switch between Mina (440C) and Ichiro VG-10 once daily maintenance is second nature.
  • Work through the value tier upgrade playbook to understand your next steps.
  • Attend or watch a technique demo (salon training, brand educator videos) and note key takeaways.

Keep the focus factual: consistent practice, documented maintenance, and gradual steel upgrades. Reach out via the contact page if you need help tailoring this checklist to your salon’s training schedule.
