The story behind JapanShears
JapanShears was founded by Kenji Thompson — an Australian-Japanese stylist with over 20 years behind the chair. Growing up between Sydney and Tokyo, Kenji developed a deep appreciation for Japanese craftsmanship — the precision of hand-forged steel, the philosophy of monozukuri (the art of making things), and the generational knowledge that master blade-smiths pass down in workshops across Sakai, Seki, and Chiba.
After years of cutting with Japanese shears and watching Australian colleagues struggle to find authentic information about what they were buying, Kenji created JapanShears.com.au — a curated collection backed by real expertise. Every brand dossier, steel guide, and product recommendation comes from direct knowledge of Japanese manufacturing, not translated marketing brochures.
Real from Japan. Curated for Australian professionals.

"After 20 years cutting, I thought I knew everything about shears. The steel comparison guide showed me why ATS-314 outperforms what I'd been using."
