Underneath the art, the steel is the real thing: Kamisori’s ATS314 cobalt super-steel at HRC62 is properly hard, takes a fine hand-honed 3D convex edge and holds it through long stretches of daily cutting, riding on a smooth ball-bearing pivot. On fine, precise work and slide cutting it performs to its price. Two clear-eyed caveats. At this hardness and with a decorative finish, it’s a scissor to baby — drops and knocks are unforgiving and a chip needs a specialist. And it’s right-handed only with a fixed finger rest, so left-handers and anyone who wants an adjustable rest are out. For a stylist who wants a flagship statement blade and will treat it accordingly, it delivers both art and edge; if you simply want the best-cutting cobalt per dollar for daily punishment, the value lives elsewhere in the range.”
