The clam-shaped convex edge with its slice grind glides through length with a quiet, even draw, and the ATS314 cobalt steel holds that edge a genuinely long time — this is the same cobalt the big premium brands charge double for. For slide cutting and soft layering it just gets on with the job.

The thing to weigh is the classic handle. It’s the straight, symmetrical grip rather than an offset, so on long days of scissor-over-comb your thumb sits in a more closed line than a dropped-thumb handle allows — if hand fatigue is a concern, Yasaka’s offset model is the same steel in a kinder posture. The flat-L screw holds tension well and adjusts easily.
