How to Prep Your Shears Before a Sharpening Appointment

Why preparation counts

A few minutes of prep protects your investment and keeps appointments efficient. These steps come straight from the Maintenance hub, sharpening guide, and our public technician questions checklist.

1. Clean and document

• Wipe blades with a chamois, run a drop of oil through the pivot, and dry fully.
• Record current tension, serial numbers, and any issues in your maintenance log.
• Photograph the shear (front, back, tip) so you have a reference point.

2. List your concerns

• Note any drag points, uneven closures, or tip damage.
• Include what services caused problems (e.g., dry slide, scissor-over-comb on thick hair).
• Prepare questions based on steel type—VG-10, ZA-18, ATS-314, cobalt, or NPM.

3. Pack responsibly

• Use padded sleeves or the original case; avoid dropping multiple shears in one pouch.
• Label sets so technicians know which cutters and thinners belong together.
• If shipping, add bubble wrap and a rigid box, plus a printout of your notes.

4. Discuss edge preferences

• Tell the technician if you want the original factory angle and finish (convex, bevel, serrated tooth pattern).
• For premium steels, reiterate expectations: e.g., “mirror convex polish on Nano Powder Metal,” “preserve Damascus pattern,” “maintain sword spine set.”

5. Confirm turnaround + guarantee

• Agree on return time, post-sharpening tension, and any touch-up policy before you leave.
• Log the appointment date, technician details, and planned follow-up in your maintenance sheet.

After the appointment

• Inspect the shear using the arrival checklist.
• Update your log with any changes in feel or tension.
