Choose a Japanese shear size

Length changes the reach of a blade. It does not tell the whole story: the grind, handle and balance also shape the way a shear works.

Compact lengths

Around 5.0–5.5 inches gives a short cutting path for detail, fringe work and precise placement.

Middle lengths

A 6.0-inch shear can cover a wide range of sectioning and cutting styles. Compare its handle and blade profile with the way you work.

Longer lengths

At 6.5 inches and above, the blade reaches through larger sections and over-comb work with fewer passes. Control matters more than chasing the longest size.
