Japanese hair shears for considered cutting choices

VG-10 vs 440C: Choosing a Shear

Compare complete models before choosing between two common shear steels.

VG-10 and 440C are common stainless steel names on hair shears. Neither tells you how a complete tool will feel in your hand.

What the material choice can do

Steel is part of how a maker designs and finishes an edge. It can affect the choices available in a range, but heat treatment, grind and tension also matter. Do not turn a steel name into a fixed sharpening schedule or a promise that one shear will glide better.

Make a fair comparison

Take two models that fit the same job. Check:

  1. The blade length you can control.
  2. The stated cutting edge and profile.
  3. Handle fit in your working grip.
  4. The thinner’s tooth design if you are comparing sets.
  5. How the edges will be serviced.

The 440C guide and VG-10 guide explain the names. Browse Mina, Ichiro and Juntetsu for models in different shapes. Choose for your cut, then maintain the tool you buy.
