Only two Japanese brands in our range, Mina and Ichiro, build a thinning scissor for the left hand: seven options between them. Six are 6.0-inch tools only; Mina Rainbow II comes in 5.5 and 6.0 inches.

Kamisori, a Canadian brand with Japanese-inspired designs, adds seven more at higher prices. In every case, choose “Left” in the selector before you add to cart.

How this list was made

We went through all 62 thinning and texturising products in the JapanShears product records and kept the ones that list a left-handed build. Fourteen do. We compared each record’s hand option, size, listed tooth count, steel field and handle on 3 November 2026. We did not test any of them; this is a comparison of listings, not a hands-on review.

The order is by brand, then by price on that date. It is not a ranking. Each card shows the selected option and its current price from the product record, so check the option before you order.

Our relationship to these products

JapanShears sells every product below, and every link goes to our own product page. Mina and Ichiro are independent Japanese brands, not JapanShears brands. JapanShears is a member of the ShearAlliance and is run by the same seller as four other Australian ShearAlliance stores. Our editorial policy explains how we compare products and why a numbered list is not a test result.

Mina: three left-handed thinners at one tooth count

All three Mina thinners list 30 V-shaped teeth, an offset handle and SUS440C steel. The differences are size, finish and the cutter they sit beside, so decide those first.

1. Mina Rainbow II: the only left-handed thinner with two lengths

Mina Rainbow II Thinning Scissors, product-family image
Mina Rainbow II Thinning Scissors Selected option: Left Handed / 5.5" $114.95 AUD

Suits: a left-handed stylist who wants a 5.5-inch thinner to sit beside a 5.5-inch cutter. Deciding field: the 5.5 and 6.0-inch left-handed options. Trade-off: it is the one to pick for length, not for any other listed difference, because its tooth count and steel match Umi and Jay II. Match the length to your cutter, and read the length from the selector label on the product page rather than from the SKU.

2. Mina Umi: the thinner that matches the Umi cutter family

Mina Umi Hair Thinning Scissors Selected option: Left $114.95 AUD

Suits: someone already using, or buying, a left-handed Umi cutter. Deciding fields: 6.0 inches, 30 V-shaped teeth, a mirror-polished finish and a key-adjustable screw. Trade-off: one length only, so a 5.5-inch kit needs a different thinner.

3. Mina Jay II: the satin finish

Mina Jay II Thinning Scissors Selected option: Left Handed $114.95 AUD

Suits: a left-handed buyer who wants a satin finish rather than Umi’s mirror polish. Deciding fields: 6.0 inches, 30 V-shaped teeth, SUS440C steel. Trade-off: it is the same tooth count and size as Umi, so choose between them on finish and on the cutter you are pairing it with. The Jay II pair combines a cutter with this thinner.

Ichiro: four left-handed thinners

4. Ichiro Rose Lefty: built for the left hand and sold that way

Ichiro Rose Lefty Thinning Scissors $199.00 AUD

Suits: a left-handed buyer who wants one fixed 6.0-inch tool with no handedness choice to get wrong. Deciding fields: 30 V-shaped teeth, offset handle, left-handed only. Trade-off: it has no right-handed twin on the page, and it sits at a higher price than the Mina options. The Rose Lefty two-piece kit pairs the cutter with this thinner.

5. Ichiro Pink Moon: 440C steel, tooth count not listed

Ichiro Pink Moon Thinning Scissors, product-family image
Ichiro Pink Moon Thinning Scissors Selected option: Left $219.00 AUD

Suits: a buyer matching the Pink Moon cutter finish. Deciding fields: 6.0 inches, 440C steel, V-shaped teeth, Right and Left variants. Trade-off: the record gives no tooth count, so you cannot compare it with the 30-tooth tools above on that field. Ask us before ordering if the count matters to you.

6. Ichiro Rose Gold: 30 teeth, and a Right or Left choice

Ichiro Rose Gold Thinning Scissors, product-family image
Ichiro Rose Gold Thinning Scissors Selected option: Left $229.95 AUD

Suits: someone who wants a listed 30-tooth count in an Ichiro finish. Deciding fields: 6.0 inches, 30 teeth, offset handle and spring-loaded pivot. Trade-off: the steel field reads only “stainless-steel”, so there is no grade to compare.

7. Ichiro Matte Black: a dark finish with 440C steel

Ichiro Matte Black Thinning Scissors Selected option: Left $229.95 AUD

Suits: a buyer who wants a dark finish and a named steel. Deciding fields: 6.0 inches, 440C steel, V-shaped teeth, separate Right and Left builds. Trade-off: no tooth count is listed, so it cannot be compared with Rose Gold on that field.

Kamisori: seven more, at higher prices

Kamisori is a Canadian brand with Japanese-inspired designs; some models are made in Japan. Its seven left-handed thinners suit a buyer who already knows the Kamisori range. Six list 6.0 inches and 30 teeth; the Sword is 6.5 inches with no tooth count listed. Each link below opens the left-handed option.

Kamisori thinnerNote from the record
Diablo II30 teeth, Takefu cobalt alloy stated
Black Diamond III30 teeth, VG-10 steel listed
Jewel III30 teeth, fixed offset handle
Jewel III Double Swivel30 teeth, both rings swivel

The table runs from the lowest to the highest price on 3 November 2026; the product pages show the current price for each option.

What you will not find

No Joewell, Yasaka, Kasho or Juntetsu thinner in our records has a left-handed option. Those makers’ left-handed listings are cutters, so a left-handed kit built around them needs a thinner from Mina, Ichiro or Kamisori. See the left-handed cutter shortlist for the cutter side.

Handedness belongs to the complete construction

  1. One handed arrangementFollow each coloured half from its ring through the pivot to its blade.
  2. Its mirrorThe ring, shank and blade arrangement is mirrored together. Turning the first tool over in your grip does not rebuild it.
A generic construction comparison, not a way to identify an unknown shear from one photograph. The colours track the two complete halves; real makers specify the cutting hand of each model.

What would change this list

A new left-handed thinner from another maker, or a change to a tooth count or hand option in a record, would alter it. If you are unsure about the thinner at all, a pair listing may suit you better than two singles: compare the left-handed collection. For right-handed thinners under a set budget, see the thinning scissors under A$300 comparison.

Before you order

  • Pick “Left” in the selector, then check the SKU in the cart. A right-handed shear used in the left hand is a different tool, not a mirrored one: the handed-build guide shows why.
  • A tooth count is not a cut ratio. Thirty teeth on two tools can remove different amounts, because tooth shape and spacing also matter. Joewell’s thinning manual explains both factors, and our cut-ratio guide shows real model figures.
  • Not sure thinning is the job? Read the thinning and texturising shortlist, which covers higher-priced right-handed models, and the anatomy guide.
