Choose the tooth layout as well as the name
The Yasaka YS listing contains four different tooth options: 16, 20, 30 and 40 teeth. Each is a 6.0-inch, right-handed thinner with an offset handle and ATS314 cobalt stainless steel. The size stays the same when you change the tooth count.
Those counts are useful identifiers, but they do not make a simple light-to-heavy scale. Tooth shape, groove design and the way you place a pass all affect the cut. Yasaka gives different specifications to its YS-160 and YS-400; more teeth does not automatically mean less hair is removed.
Add a thinner for a particular job
Use your cutting shear to establish the line and shape, then add the YS where you want to adjust weight or soften a transition. Work in light passes, comb out the cut hair and look at the section before repeating. That gives you a clearer decision than choosing a tooth count for a whole hair type.
If you are replacing a thinner, compare its actual tooth pattern and the change you want from it. Our thinning and texturising guide explains what to compare. The Yasaka brand guide separates the YS options from Yasaka’s plain cutting blades.
Keep the chosen tooth pattern clear
Hair can remain between the YS teeth after a pass. Clear it gently without forcing a comb or hard object into the gaps, then dry and protect the shear. The 16-, 20-, 30- and 40-tooth layouts are separate options: note your actual tooth count when keeping a record or asking a technician about service.
Our cleaning and storage guide covers toothed blades. If the thinner starts catching hair, use the changed-cut guide to describe where it happens before arranging an assessment.
