The Ergo Apprentice is a good example of why the complete variant name matters. Choosing the longer tool also changes the cutting edge.
| Option | Listed edge | Starting point for your choice |
|---|---|---|
| 5.5-inch cutter | Convex slice | Compare this when drawing or slicing cuts are part of the technique you are learning. |
| 6.0-inch cutter | Micro-serrated | Compare this when you want teeth along the edge to help hold hair for controlled lines. |
Both are right-handed cutters with offset handles, stainless alloy steel and a polished finish. The micro-serrated edge is not simply the convex option with extra reach; it gives a different contact with the hair.
For an apprentice, the useful question is what you will practise most often. Discuss the edge with your trainer, then compare the nominal length with a familiar tool. A shorter shear keeps the tip closer to your hand; a longer one reaches further through a section.
Our convex edge guide explains the difference between an edge intended to move through hair and a serrated edge. The buyer’s guide uses these two Ergo variants as a worked example.
If you also need a thinner, compare a complete cutting and thinning set by its individual tools. Adding a thinner does not change the edge of either Ergo cutter.
Keep the full option name in your record: 5.5-inch Convex Slice or 6.0-inch Micro-Serrated. The serrations on the longer option are part of its blade construction, not damage to smooth away. Show the exact option to a technician before any edge work, and follow the model’s instructions for its pivot.
Our working care routine explains how to protect the blade between appointments. If the cut changes, use the symptom guide to describe what happens without guessing its cause.
