Mina Shears: Compare the Family
Brand origin: Japan
Compare Mina families by cutter edge, hand and selected contents. Read Classic II, Sakura II, Timeless, Matte Black, Black Diamond and Umi as separate tools and bundles.
Mina is an independent Japanese shear brand with cutters, thinners and sets across several families. Start within the range by deciding how you want the cutting edge to behave. The Classic II cutter in 5.5 inches has a micro-serrated bevel edge and semi-offset handle. The Sakura II pair with a 5.5-inch cutter combines a convex cutter with an offset layout.
A construction difference you can use
The Classic II cutter’s fine serrations help hold the section as the blades close. A smooth convex edge is a different construction. Read our blade guide to separate the edge from blade profile and cutting-line curvature; the word convex alone does not establish a specialist slide-cutting model.
For a first kit, discuss the intended tasks with your educator before choosing by finish. The apprentice guide helps you settle hand, familiar length and edge. Mina families have different selectors, so a choice available on one model should not be assumed across the range.
Read the two tools in a set separately
The Classic II pair with a 5.5-inch cutter includes a fixed 6.0-inch, 30-tooth thinner. The Sakura II pair also keeps its six-inch, 30-tooth thinner fixed while the selected cutter length changes. Those matching thinner sizes do not make the cutters’ edges or handles identical.
Other Mina configurations add different choices. The Sakura II Master lets you choose two cutter lengths, while the Rainbow II pair adds handed and thinner-size decisions. Read the component names rather than treating the set’s selected size as the length of every tool.
The set guide helps decide whether both jobs belong in your kit. Browse the Mina collection to compare the current listings, then use the product page for its selected option and price.
Similar black finishes can cover different edges
At a shared 5.5-inch cutter size, Timeless and Black Diamond both list right-handed SUS440C tools with offset handles. Timeless uses a convex slice edge; Black Diamond uses a flat bevel. Start with that actual construction difference rather than the dark finish.
Their pairs also deserve a component read. The Timeless guide compares its three cutter choices and fixed six-inch, thirty-tooth thinner with buying either tool singly. The Black Diamond guide does the same for its bevel cutter and fixed thinner. Equal tooth counts do not establish identical tooth designs.
Matte Black presents another useful distinction. Its single six-inch cutter lists a convex edge, while the six-inch pair lists a flat-edge cutter and V-tooth thinner. The Matte Black comparison puts those two listings together so the shared name does not hide the edge choice.
Umi’s hand menu belongs to each purchase
The Umi left-handed six-inch cutter is one cutting tool. Umi also has a separate thinner and a three-tool Master with two cutters plus a fixed six-inch, thirty-tooth thinner. The Umi model guide starts with the single cutter’s hand and length, then asks whether either additional tool fills a job.
A larger bundle has its own menu. The left-handed Umi Master with 5.5- and 6.0-inch cutters is one specific combination; its fixed thinner is another component to read. Keep all three lengths with the selected hand when comparing it with individual tools.
Use the similar-name guide when two listings look close. Reading the family, tool count and full selected contents gives you a shortlist you can explain before adding anything to cart.
Sakura engraving does not identify the thumb mechanism
The fixed-handle Sakura II pair and Sakura Double Swivel pair both offer a six-inch cutter beside a six-inch, 30-tooth thinner. Double Swivel adds a separate movable thumb assembly on each tool. Keep that mechanism separate from the main blade pivot and from the engraving shared across these Sakura names.
The single Double Swivel cutter at six inches is a right-handed convex tool in SUS440C. Its other listed lengths are 5.5 and 6.5 inches. The separate thinner stays six inches with 30 V-shaped teeth. Buy the component that fills a job instead of adding a pair for the blossom detail alone.
Our fixed-versus-swivel guide explains what moves. The Sakura II guide retains the fixed pair’s component question. For comparisons within other stocked ranges, the salon brand map leads to actual models rather than treating a brand as one handle shape.
