What the Specifications Mean

Two features define this model: the ATS314 grade and the blade grind.

ATS314 is a cobalt-enriched stainless from Hitachi/Proterial — an alloy steel, not a carbon tool steel — and this model sits at 58-60 HRC within that family.

The grind is the distinctive part: a sword-shaped, hollow-ground upper blade over a convex, hollow-ground lower. That pairing is what produces a slice edge — the blades travel past each other along the hair’s length, so the shear cuts on the draw rather than on force. It behaves as intended on slide cutting, graduation and blended finishes; it is not the geometry you want if your work is predominantly hard, dry blunt chopping.

The handle is offset — thumb ring below the finger ring — and right-handed. Sizes are whole-shear lengths: 5.5”, 6.0”, 6.5” and 7.0”. The two longer sizes carry full blades for larger sections and scissor-over-comb reach. Kasho is a Japanese manufacturer.

Wipe the blades dry after each session, oil the pivot occasionally, and store it away from other tools. When the cut starts to drag, book a professional shear service.
