A premium shear should earn its place in your daily kit. Before choosing a model, work through these five questions.

1. What will this shear do most often?

Name the cut: precise lines, slide cutting, dry detail, scissor-over-comb or texturising. Then compare blade length, shape and edge for that work. A specialist tool can be excellent at one job and awkward as your only cutter.

2. Does the handle suit your grip?

Compare offset, crane and swivel designs with the shear you use now. Consider thumb position, finger-hole fit and how the balance feels in the cutting positions you actually use. A premium steel does not fix an uncomfortable handle.

3. Which exact variant are you buying?

Check the product page for size, left- or right-hand configuration, tooth count and included items. Models within one family can have different edges or roles. If you need a matched cutter and thinner, confirm both pieces rather than relying on the set name.

4. How will you care for the edge?
